A New Report Sheds Light on the OLED Displays Apple Will Use in the iPhone 12 Lineup

A new report aims to shed some light on just how Apple will implement its all-OLED lineup of iPhones later this year.

Display analyst Ross Young has put together a nice look at what we should probably expect later this year when Apple introduces the iPhone 12 lineup, which will reportedly boast four new iPhones — all of which will include an OLED display. Young posted the report on his own site, Display Supply Chain Consultants, and confirms many elements of the upcoming displays that we’ve heard in the past.

Here’s how it all breaks down in the broad strokes:

5.4-inch “iPhone 12”

This will be the smallest iPhone Apple launches later this year. It will feature a 5.4-inch flexible OLED display that is sourced from Samsung Display, and boast a Y-OCTA integrated touch panel. This means the device won’t have a separate touch layer. It will have a pixel-per-inch (PPI) count of 475 and a resolution of 2340×1080.

6.1-inch “iPhone 12 Max”

This is the first time that we’ve heard “iPhone 12 Max” up to this point, so this may not be what Apple actually uses later this year. But we’ll run with it. This will feature a 6.1-inch display that’s sourced from both BOE (which lines up with previous rumors) and LG. It will also be a flexible display, but it will have an add-on touch sensor. The PPI will reportedly be set at 460 and it will have a resolution of 2532×1170.

6.1-inch “iPhone 12 Pro”

This will be where Apple starts to make the improvements to its display versus the current iPhone 11 lineup. Young believes the handset will feature 10-bit color, which should bring true-to-life colors, but also more vibrancy overall. Color gradients should also be improved. This display will be another flexible OLED sourced from Samsung Display, with an add-on touch layer. It will have a PPI count of 460 and a resolution of 2532×1170.

The most exciting element will be Apple’s adoption of its extreme dynamic range (XDR) technology, which it introduced with its XDR standalone display last year. But, there will be some caveats: Apple is rumored to be linking XDR (extreme dynamic range) compatibility to the iPhone 12 series. XDR performance on its monitors is specified by Apple as 1000 nits of full screen brightness, 1600 nits of peak brightness, 1M:1 contrast, 10-bits of color and ~100% P3 wide color gamut. To date, Samsung Display has only achieved 1342 nits of peak brightness and full screen brightness of 828 nits on smartphones, so if Apple does use XDR, the XDR specifications for brightness will need to change. Given the lower black levels in its OLED smartphones vs. its XDR monitor, contrast should actually be higher on its smartphones.

Young also notes that the display in this handset will not have LTPO, but the rumored 120Hz refresh rate could still make it.

6.7-inch “iPhone 12 Pro Max”

This larger version of the iPhone 12 Pro will feature a flexible OLED panel measuring in at 6.7 inches. It will have an integrated touch layer and be sourced from Samsung Display. The resolution will come in at 2778×1284 and it will have a PPI count of 458. Young believes it will also be XDR capable, just like the iPhone 12 Pro. Basically, all of the improvements that Apple will introduce with the iPhone 12 Pro’s OLED display will be here in the larger iPhone 12 Pro Max. Which is not a surprise at all.

Young includes a rendering of the iPhone 12 Pro, which you can see in PRODUCT(RED) at the top of this article.
